Nitro, developed in the Jan ecosystem, is a compact inference engine for developers who want AI capabilities to run locally or at the edge. It can be embedded in products, distributed as a binary or package, and used as an OpenAI-compatible server so applications can switch to local models with fewer API changes.
Local inference improves data control but shifts security, licensing, performance, and update responsibility to the operator. Verify model licenses and checksums, bind services to trusted interfaces, add authentication, benchmark memory and latency on target hardware, sandbox untrusted inputs, patch dependencies, and disclose the AGPLv3 obligations before distributing an integrated product.
